Your LinkedIn profile is your freelance shopfront
When you freelance, clients check your LinkedIn before they reply to your message or your proposal. Unlike an employee, you are not selling "I want a job" — you are selling "here is the problem I solve and here is the proof." Your whole profile should read like a small landing page for your service.
Write a headline that names the service, not the title
A freelancer headline that says "Freelancer" tells a client nothing. Name the outcome you deliver and who you deliver it for.
- Weak: "Freelance Designer"
- Strong: "Brand and web design for early-stage SaaS startups | 40+ launches"
Lead with the result. The word "freelance" can come later or be dropped entirely.
Turn your About section into a pitch
Open with the client's problem, not your biography. Three short paragraphs work well:
- The problem your clients have before they hire you.
- How you solve it and what working with you looks like.
- A clear call to action: how to reach you and what to send.
End with your email or a line like "DM me to talk about your project." Make the next step obvious.
Show proof, not just skills
Clients hire on evidence. Use the Featured section to pin your best work: a case study, a portfolio link, a testimonial screenshot, a results post. Each piece should answer "can this person actually do it?"
- Pin two or three standout projects.
- Add one client testimonial if you have it.
- Link your portfolio or booking page.
Use Experience to list engagements, not jobs
You can list your freelance practice as one ongoing role ("Independent [your service], 2022 to present") and then describe representative projects in the bullets. Lead each bullet with the client outcome.
- "Rebuilt checkout flow for an e-commerce client, lifting conversion by 18 percent."
- "Delivered a 12-page brand guide adopted across three product teams."
Keep your profile open and contactable
Set your profile to public, add a custom URL, and make sure your contact info is filled in. A client who cannot reach you will move to the next freelancer. Turn on "Open to" providing services so you appear in client searches.

Treat your profile as a sales asset that works while you sleep. A freelancer who shows the problem, the solution, and the proof in the first screen wins the client before the call even starts.
